Britain’s energy grid operator called on three coal-fired power stations to stand ready to produce power on Monday now that a cold front is putting too much strain on the electricity grid. Bloomberg reports.
It is the first time this winter that the network operator has to call up reserves. The plants are now operational and are ready to produce electricity on Monday if needed. In the UK there are very cold temperatures, so the demand for electricity is soaring. Even if the wind speeds, which are high, decrease.
According to the network operator, the start-up of three coal-fired power stations is necessary in order to be able to always supply the British with energy.
Phased out
From next year, the UK will only really phase out coal as an energy generator now that the country is keen to reduce emissions from the energy sector. Only this winter will the British government ask whether power stations can remain on standby, in connection with the global gas shortage.
The cold won’t really take shape in the UK until tomorrow and will most likely last all week. Among other things, the very cold fog and strong winds are playing tricks on the British.
