In a written statement from the Georgian Ministry of Interior, it was reported that the 49-year-old attacker opened fire with a pistol from the balcony of the apartment where he lived. In the statement, it was noted that 4 civilians and a police officer lost their lives and 5 people were injured in the incident.

The statement said that security forces carried out an operation at the attacker’s house and that the suspect committed suicide before the police arrived. Georgian Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri, who arrived at the scene, stated that the attacker, who opened fire on civilians and police officers, served in the Georgian Armed Forces from 2006 to 2021.

Stating that the attacker was found dead at his home, Gomelauri said: “Special forces arrived at the scene. They called for a ceasefire. The attacker opened fire several more times. When the special forces opened the door, there was another shot. “He was lying on the bed and he had the gun with him,” he said. An investigation into the attack has been launched. (AA)
