Emanuela Orlandi, whose father was a Vatican official, mysteriously disappeared on June 22, 1983 at the age of 15. Orlandi, who was never heard from again, was claimed to have been kidnapped for the release of Mehmet Ali Ağca, the suspect in the assassination of Pope John Paul II, while in prison in Italy.
Although it has been claimed from time to time that Emanuela Orlandi was alive or that bones supposedly belonging to her were found, and excavations were carried out at some points in 2019, no concrete finds on Orlandi could be found in the last 40 years.
The documentary “The Missing Girl from the Vatican”, which was broadcast on the Netflix digital platform last month, put the Emanuela Orlandi incident back on the public agenda. In the documentary series in question, in interviews with witnesses, it was highlighted that incidents of sexual abuse in the Vatican and the Vatican-mafia relationship could be behind Orlandi’s disappearance.
