German Defense Minister resigns
German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht has submitted a letter of resignation to Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Christine Lambrecht, in a statement on the German Defense Ministry’s Twitter account, stated that she had decided to leave her position and passed it on to Prime Minister Scholz.
Lambrecht noted:
“The media focus on me for months does not allow soldiers, the armed forces and security policy decisions that are in the interest of German citizens to be objectively reported and discussed. The valuable work of the soldiers and the large number of motivated people in the army must be at the forefront. That’s why I decided to quit my job.”
Lambrecht, who thanked everyone who gave him this opportunity and supported him, is expected to make a statement on the issue in the coming days.
Christine Lambrecht has come forward with her mistakes during her tenure and has been the subject of public criticism. Lambrecht, who became defense minister in December 2021, said in one of his first interviews that he did not know the ranks in the army and announced that he would send 5,000 helmets to Ukraine in January 2022, before the start of the Russia- Ukraine. War.
There was also strong criticism for Defense Minister Lambrecht taking his son to visit soldiers in an army helicopter and sharing the photo of his son taken in the helicopter on social media. Lambrecht and his son were on vacation after the visit. Lambrecht admitted months later that he had taken the photograph in question.
Lastly, Lambrecht, who shared a New Year’s message amid the sounds of fireworks on social media on New Year’s Eve, drew strong criticism and opposition parties demanded his resignation. (AA)
