Scandalous move from Sweden: the prosecutor decided on the Erdogan model
Tensions between Sweden and Turkey, which are in line to become NATO members after Russia’s attack on Ukraine, are not abating.
An incident that took place last week in Sweden, where Ankara opposed NATO membership for “not cooperating in the fight against terrorism”, sparked tensions between the two countries.
Last week, supporters of the terrorist organization held a rally in the Swedish capital Stockholm and held a demonstration with a model resembling President Erdoğan. Although the Swedish administration did not care much about the incident, this situation increased the tension on the Ankara-Stockholm line.
The first statement by the Swedish judiciary on this issue appeared in the news item that the Swedish press introduced with the phrase “last minute”. In the news quoted by Aftonbladet, one of Sweden’s most widely read newspapers, “The Swedish judiciary issued its first decision on the matter. No illegal crime was committed,” he said.
HE SAID “I DON’T THINK THAT WAS AN INSULT”
District Attorney Lucas Eriksson, speaking to the newspaper, said: “I took this case as a libel case, but I don’t think it’s insulting enough. Therefore, I decided not to launch a preliminary investigation.” “A review can be requested and then another prosecutor can review this case,” Eriksson said.
Swedish media reported that Eriksson said it is not a crime to wear a model resembling Erdogan in front of Stockholm City Hall.
THE REACTION HAS BEEN COLLECTED
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström reacted to the incident, stating that this incident was done to sabotage Sweden’s NATO membership process.
Although Ankara reacted strongly to the incident, it demanded that those responsible be brought to justice. Although a note was delivered to the Swedish ambassador to Turkey, the visit of the speaker of the Swedish parliament, Andreas Norlen, to Turkey was postponed.
