Next week, the European Parliament will vote to add the Iranian Revolutionary Guards to the list of European terrorist organisations. This responds to the proposal of PvdA MEP Thijs Reuten.
He claims the Revolutionary Guard is on the list of terrorist organizations because it “uses terrorist means inside and outside Iran,” he says. “And I don’t have to explain to anyone that what is happening in Iran right now – kidnappings, imprisonment and summary justice of innocent Iranians – means to me that the measure is full.”
If the Revolutionary Guard is indeed added to the list, that means that all sorts of companies – which are now suppliers to that guard – or anyone who does business with them, must stop. “Doing business with terrorist organizations is not allowed,” Reuten continues. “Of course this must also be maintained. Listing it is very important as support for Iranians, but a whole application package must also be introduced.’
Ukraine
According to Reuten, the West is partly responsible for the terror practiced by the Guard. “By continuing to do business with the Revolutionary Guards, we are providing them with the means to terrorize their own population,” he said. ‘We have also learned this recently in our relations with Russia. I think it should end, and I certainly think it would send a strong signal to the Iranian regime.”
Reuten also speaks of a link to the war in Ukraine. Iran also supplies drones and missiles to Russia, which in turn attacks Ukraine. “So these two regimes are engaged in oppression, terror and war in different ways. That’s why I think we should firstly support the Iranians, but secondly we should do ourselves a favor by really confronting the Iranian regime.”
