To remove the appearance of bias, the US attorney has appointed a special prosecutor to investigate secret documents found in Joe Biden’s private possession. “A unique moment,” says US correspondent Jan Postma.
This week it was announced that secret documents were found in a former private office of Biden in Washington and in his own home. According to Postma, this is a serious investigation with political risks for Biden. “This prosecutor is an independent, self-employed investigator who may be appointed if an appearance of conflict of interest or political affiliation could arise. This prosecutor will investigate anything he finds and it could be a pretty big investigation.’
That prosecutor is currently investigating documents found in former President Donald Trump’s home. “This is a unique moment in American history where both the incumbent and the former president are being investigated by such a special prosecutor,” Postma says. The special counsel assigned to the case is Robert Hur, a lawyer who worked at the Justice Department during the presidency of Donald Trump (2017-2021).
Corvette
The new set of confidential documents was found in the garage of Biden’s private residence in Wilmington. It is not known how many documents would be involved, but that makes it all the more painful, Postma says.
The documents were found in the same garage where Biden also kept his classic Corvette sports car. “The garage was closed and people know that I take confidential documents seriously,” was the president’s response to reporters’ questions. “This is typical Biden, a little clumsy and shows that this scandal is at the expense of his credibility,” says Postma.
News of the secret documents will somewhat overshadow Rutte and Hoekstra’s visit to the White House, Postma thinks. “This will also be in the news next week and reporters will be asking for it.”
