PUBLICATION OF ANIMATED CARTOONS ABOUT CHARLIE HEBDO

Charlie Hebdo magazine published cartoons about Khamenei on January 4 as part of a contest it launched last month “to support the protests in Iran.”

After the incident, Iran called the French ambassador in Tehran, Nicolas Roche, to the Foreign Ministry and delivered a protest note to the French government.

In response, Iran has also decided to close the Institute for Iranian Studies in Tehran, which operates under the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On Sunday, January 8, protests were held outside the French Embassy in Tehran and at the Tomb of Hazrat Masume in Qom, in response to the cartoons in question.

Salman Rushdie, who drew backlash from the Islamic world with his book “The Satanic Verses” and received a death fatwa from Iranian revolutionary leader Ayatollah Khomeini, was attacked with a knife on August 12, 2022.

Rushdie, who suffered more than 10 stab wounds, including one to the neck, was airlifted to hospital by helicopter and underwent surgery. (AA)
