British want court to test Russian aggression Related articles

British politicians have presented a proposal to convict Russia through a court of law for its aggression against Ukraine. The proposal is supported by all political parties and is intended to hold Russian President Vladimir Putin and his generals accountable for their actions. This writes The Guardian.

Opposition leader Keir Starmer, former NATO Secretary General George Robertson, former Foreign Secretary David Owen and former Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith, among others, support the establishment of such a tribunal, in so that this war can be viewed with ‘the same vision’ as what was done after WWII with the Nazi leaders at the Nuremberg Tribunals.’

International Criminal Court

While the International Criminal Court in The Hague is already investigating alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine, the special tribunal has the specific purpose of convicting the aggression. According to proponents, the ICC lacks the capacity to test the amount of aggression. Something that the United Nations defines as “invasion or attack by armed forces of a territory belonging to another country”.

If a special court is created, the pressure on Russia and Putin will only increase, according to supporters. Not only would solidarity with Ukraine get a boost, but Russian leaders would also more quickly abstain from international travel in connection with international arrest warrants. “Furthermore, we demonstrate that aggression will never be without consequences,” advocates say.

10 months

A statement also mentions that the war has been raging for more than ten months and that it is one of the largest invasions since World War II. Since then, thousands of Ukrainian citizens have been killed or injured, eight million people have been displaced and another eight million have become refugees. Civilian infrastructure and economic assets – worth tens of billions combined – have been destroyed or looted, and irreplaceable cultural monuments have been reduced to dust.
