Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been admitted to a US hospital. The Brazilian newspaper O Globo writes that Bolsonaro has abdominal pains. The news comes a day after his supporters stormed several government buildings in the capital Brasilia. The former president has been in Florida for over a week.
A source close to the family confirmed the news to Reuters news agency and said her situation was “not worrying”. Bolsonaro has been hospitalized several times in recent years due to intestinal blockages. That would have worked since he was stabbed in a 2018 attack while campaigning for president.
Presidential election lost
Right-wing radical Bolsonaro lost the presidential election in October to his left-wing rival Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro had previously suggested that fraud would have been committed if he lost, and many of his supporters still believe the presidency has been taken from him. He left shortly before his successor Lula was sworn in. On Sunday, Bolsonaro’s followers stormed the Brazilian parliament building, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace because they do not accept Lula’s oath. Lula blamed Bolsonaro for encouraging this kind of behavior in speeches.
Condemned
Bolsonaro himself condemned Sunday night’s assault, denying having anything to do with it. Peaceful protests are part of democracy. But the looting and break-ins of government buildings that happened today, like in 2013 and 2017 by the left, are not included,” the former president said on Twitter. He also wrote that as president he always adhered to the constitution and has always respected and defended democracy, transparency and freedom.
