About 500 Russians were killed or wounded in a Ukrainian attack in Kherson on New Year’s Eve. The Ukrainian authorities reported today, although the figures have not yet been verified by other parties or by Russia. “It’s hard to verify, but it’s clear that something major happened,” says Frans Osinga, a professor of war studies at Leiden University.
“Not much is known yet about this attack,” Osinga said. “It is about the Ukrainian attack on Makiivka in the Donetsk region, in which about 400 Russian soldiers are said to have been killed by several HIMARS missiles.”
Russian mistakes
That attack was made possible due to mistakes on the Russian side. ‘Mobile phones were switched on so that whereabouts could be easily traced, probably with the help of Western investigative services. Then HIMARS missiles were fired at it. The fact that the ammunition was stored resulted in this insane number of casualties.’
This incident can be attributed to local commanders, Osinga says. “Ukraine has already demonstrated that it can identify and disable Russian command centers and depots, for example. When Russia makes a building that big a major target thirteen kilometers behind the front, you provoke it. I’ve never had to gather this number of soldiers so en masse.”
There are also many criticisms among commanders. “This also applies to senior Kremlin officials.”
