Former US President Donald Trump has called on all Republicans to support Kevin McCarthy for Speaker of the House of Representatives. McCarthy did not get the necessary number of votes in Tuesday’s election because some party members think he is not conservative enough.
Trump writes on his social platform Truth Social that it’s time for all Republicans in the House to rally behind McCarthy. “Republicans, don’t turn this great victory into a huge and shameful defeat.”
Party leader McCarthy still fell short of a majority after three ballots on Tuesday, even though there are more Republicans than Democrats in the House. Normally the nomination of the group leader of the largest party is a formality, but now for the first time in a hundred years it has failed.
Trump supporters, in particular, accuse McCarthy of not being tough enough on Democrats. On Wednesday, the House will try again to find a speaker.
