Canada and Australia join the growing list of countries requiring travelers from China to undergo a mandatory corona test before departure. Australian Health Minister Mark Butler says he is taking this step due to “a lack of information from Beijing”. Canada does so due to “limited epidemiological data”.
For both countries, the measure will come into force on 5 January. Canada will also test sewage from incoming aircraft from China to detect potential contamination faster. The Canberra authorities speak of a “rapidly developing situation in China” and want to protect Australia “from new emerging variants of the corona virus”.
Previously, the United States, Spain, Italy, France and the United Kingdom, among others, had taken similar measures due to the situation in China. Since last month, the number of corona infections has increased significantly. For travelers from China to the Netherlands, only a voluntary self-test applies.
