Leaders discussed the supply of “adequate” weapons and a new €18 billion financial aid program to Ukraine during the talks, with Zelensky insisting that the first tranche be sent this month, the statement said.

In December it was already clear that the president of the EU government council and that of the European Commission would hold a summit with Zelensky in early February, but it had not yet been decided where it would be held. The two EU leaders invited Zelensky to Brussels, but also wanted to meet elsewhere.
EU Heads of Government Council President Charles Michel, von der Leyen and Zelenski will discuss at the summit how the EU can continue to assist Ukraine in keeping Russia at bay. Ukraine’s preparations for becoming a member of the EU will likely also be discussed.
