Chinese Tourists Slowly Return: ‘Beehive, Outlet Malls and Diamond Houses Turn’ Related Articles

Despite the fact that Chinese tourists have been able to travel more easily since January, no mass tourism is yet to be expected in Europe and the Netherlands. This was stated by the Dutch Congress and Tourism Office (NBTC).

In total, 190,000 tourists are expected from China in 2023, says Jos Vranken, director general of the NBTC. ‘For comparison: we expect 6.4 million guests from Germany. That’s a big increase compared to this year, but with the 190,000 tourists, it’s not even half as high as before the corona pandemic.’ At that time, nearly 400,000 tourists from China visited our country.

Vranken points out that Chinese tourists spend more than tourists from neighboring countries. “They spend three times more than the average German guest. It is therefore fantastic for a large number of companies in our sector to see this group of guests returning to Europe and the Netherlands.’ Above all, luxury companies will be happy with the return of tourists from China. ‘Think of the Bijenkorf, outlet centers and diamond houses in the Netherlands benefit from it.’

Many barriers stand in the way of returning

The fact that tourists are still not returning en masse is mainly due to bureaucratic hurdles, Vranken thinks. Many Chinese have let their passports expire during the corona pandemic and have to apply for a new one. Also, they have to apply for a Schengen visa, which takes time. Don’t forget that many Chinese people have been hit economically and financially in recent years. That’s why they would like to build another buffer.’

Also, few planes still fly at the old level between China and Europe. “These are some obstacles that hinder the return to Europe.” Vranken expects the old level before corona to be “realized” again only in 2024 or 2025.
