In Germany, there has been talk for days about the video message from Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht which she posted on her Instagram page on New Year’s Eve. It is not the first time that the minister has received strong criticism. Lambrecht spoke, among other things, about the war in Ukraine and how happy she was to have met interesting and “great” people.
“She indicated that the war is taking place near Germany, after which she says in the same sentence that it gave her the opportunity to meet ‘great’ and interesting people,” explains German correspondent Derk Marseille. “For example, it wasn’t about the fallen victims.”
Not only the form and content of the video message, but also the fact that it is hard to see and almost to hear, is still under discussion in Germany three days after publication.
Criticism
‘The FDP described the minister’s message as ‘inappropriate’, other parties such as the SPD and De Groenen have not (yet) responded. This in itself can be called a reaction,’ says Marseille.
“It was clear from the face of Lambrecht’s spokesman at Monday’s press conference that he was not at all interested in answering questions about the video message. In his brief reply, he said that the video contains a personal message from the minister and that, to his knowledge, no resources from the Ministry of Defense were used.
It’s not the first time
Recently, Lambrecht has often been noted for some statements and behavior. “For example, once he took a service helicopter and took his son with him. The helicopter then landed near his vacation address and not his business appointment. Coincidence she called it.’
Marseille see Lambrecht’s appointment primarily as a political decision. ‘He has nothing to do with defense, even if he has to take a very difficult position at the moment. This is precisely the time and opportunity to present yourself and Germany on the world stage. But now, for example, it’s just about this video. Armin Laschet, the former CDU chancellor candidate, called it simply embarrassing.’
After three days, the video message continues to be talked about. ‘The question arises from many quarters whether this is not a reason to resign. With comments like this, in the end it will also be necessary to comment on whether this minister is still sustainable’.
