The 48-hour strike was organized by the RMT trade union. Around 40,000 RMT members are taking part in the campaign. The train drivers’ union Aslef also goes on strike on Thursday. Rail unions have long fought to impose a substantial wage increase and better working conditions. Work was also interrupted several times before Christmas.

The British government is asking the unions to return to the negotiating table. According to the government, the actions damage the railway and cause disruption to commuters.
Sunak disappointed
There are also actions in other sectors of the UK, including driving examiners and traffic police. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was disappointed with the strikes.
