Waterloo station in London. Rail traffic in the UK has been largely disrupted by a railway strike. It is the country’s first regular working day after New Year’s, and many people are unable to get to work. London’s main railway stations are virtually extinct.
The 48-hour strike was organized by the RMT trade union. Around 40,000 RMT members are taking part in the campaign. The train drivers’ union Aslef also goes on strike on Thursday. Rail unions have long fought to impose a substantial wage increase and better working conditions. Work was also interrupted several times before Christmas.
