27 people evacuated with presidential amnesty in Egypt
Mohammed Abdulaziz, a member of Egypt’s Presidential Amnesty Committee, made a written statement on the issue on his Facebook page.
Abdulaziz claimed that 27 detainees were released on the first day of 2023.
Abdulaziz, who also released the names of those released, stated that these people were detained in the cases in 2018, 2021 and 2022, but did not provide information on the charges against them.
On the other hand, the chairman of the Düstur party, Cemile İsmail, made a statement on his Facebook page, assessing the evictions in question as “a good start to the new year”.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah es-Sisi said on April 21, 2022 that he intended to start a political dialogue in the country, after which the Amnesty Committee was activated on April 24.
The first meeting of the national dialogue process, announced by Sisi and covering all segments except the Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwan), was held on July 5, 2022 and the second on July 19 in Cairo.
The number of people who have been released with a judicial decision or presidential amnesty since April amounts to 595.
Under Egyptian law, the Public Ministry has the power to release detainees, while the president has the power to pardon all or part of the sentence of those convicted with final sentences. (AA)
