It is day 313 of the war in Ukraine. Follow the latest news about the war and all its aftermath in this live blog.
Dozens of Russian soldiers killed in Ukrainian missile attack
15:13 | At least 63 soldiers have been killed by a Ukrainian rocket attack on a temporary Russian military base in Ukraine, the Russian defense ministry said. The Ukrainians, who have not claimed responsibility for the attack, say there are many more victims and the death toll could be as high as 400.
Ukraine is said to have launched six Himar missiles on New Year’s Eve, of which Russia was able to fire two from the sky, according to the Russians. The Russian soldiers were housed in an empty school building in Makijivka, a town near Donetsk. A source told the Reuters news agency that they were reservists called up during the partial mobilization.
According to The Guardian newspaper, this could be the deadliest attack on Russian troops since the outbreak of war. It is very rare for Russia to make any announcements about military losses in Ukraine.
Images circulate on social media showing almost nothing of the school building is still standing. Russian military bloggers report casualties, but the exact number is unclear. It is also suggested that ammunition may have been stored in the building.
Ukraine rejects drone strikes
12:15 | Ukraine says it repelled another Russian drone strike on Sunday night. The flak would have fired all drones in the air and avoided casualties. It is the third night in a row that Russia has carried out a large-scale drone strike on Ukraine.
At least five people were killed in Russian attacks over the New Year weekend. All three days would be Iranian-made attack drones. The army says it shot down 41 drones and a missile on Monday.
The country’s energy supply would have been the target of the attack, as has often happened in recent weeks. Part of the capital Kiev is currently without electricity. According to the network operator, the situation has gotten ‘more complicated’ since Monday morning. Authorities are partially cutting off electricity to avoid overloading the grid.
Russian officials said on Monday that Ukrainian drones also hit a Russian power plant in the Bryansk border region. A village would then temporarily have no power.
Putin prepares Russians for a protracted war
08:25 | The new Russian drone attacks on Ukraine are in line with expectations, so new similar attacks cannot be ruled out. “It’s the only thing the Russians are still having any kind of success with,” says Patrick Bolder, a strategy analyst at the Center for Strategic Studies in The Hague. At the same time, the Russian president slightly changes his rhetoric. “By saying this war was necessary because the integrity of Russia was in danger, he is preparing public opinion for a long war that will cost more.”
Kiev infrastructure affected
06:00 | As a result of the night attacks on the Ukrainian capital Kiev, the energy infrastructure was damaged, resulting in power and heating cuts. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said so.
Drone attacks across Ukraine
05:00 | Parts of Ukraine have been hit again by Russian attacks. In the south, east and north of the country, the Ukrainian air defense shot down drones. Even above Kiev. Yesterday, on New Year’s Eve, the Russian army also bombed Ukraine from the air. This resulted in deaths and dozens of injuries. According to President Zelensky, the army has also removed objects from the sky.
Long sentenced threat to man who ignored ban on fireworks in Kiev
02:00 | Despite a nationwide ban on fireworks, a 47-year-old Ukrainian in Kiev started the new year with fireworks. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said he faces up to five years in prison.
Neighbors alerted the police when the man started shooting. At his home, the police found a whole arsenal of fireworks. He is accused of inciting a riot. Shortly after its brief New Year’s celebration with fireworks, an air raid alarm went off in Kiev, but due to Russian drones.
