Controversial environmental group announces: Let’s stop actions
In the statement issued by the group, titled “We Resign”, it was indicated that the activists who blocked busy roads, stuck to buildings and participated in various civil disobedience movements would temporarily cease their actions, mentioning that such methods did not achieve the desired effect.
Emphasizing that the group took action about 4 years ago to bring attention to climate change, but little has changed during this time and emissions continue to rise, the statement read: “As we enter the new year, we made a controversial decision to temporarily moving away from public disturbances as a primary tactic. What is most needed right now is to destabilize the abuse of power and ensure the transition to a just society by working together to end the age of fossil fuels. Our greedy, profit-seeking politicians will not do this without pressure.”
The environmental group said it will focus on strengthening numbers and building bridges to increase its power and influence.
Extinction Rebellion have been involved many times before, including blocking major roads and bridges in central London, blocking oil refineries and breaking windows at Barclays bank and spraying fake blood on the Treasury building.
Hundreds of people were detained in various demonstrations and actions organized by the group. (AA)
