Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has no mercy for the “hostile protest movement” in the country. Raisi said it today during a speech in Tehran. The president blames the demonstrations on “hypocrites, monarchists and anti-revolutionaries”. “The country is still open to people who have been tempted to protest, but we show no mercy to people who are hostile,” the conservative president said.
Protests have raged in Iran for more than 100 days following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. She died in her cell after being arrested by the police because she did not wear the headscarf correctly. Hundreds of people have died and thousands have been arrested, according to authorities.
Executions
However, human rights organizations put the death toll among protesters at 450. Earlier this month, two people were executed for their roles in the demonstrations. Nine other people were sentenced to death. More than 18,000 people are reportedly imprisoned.
According to Iran, the protests are being fueled by foreign powers, such as the United States. “Their aim is to divert Islamic society from the lofty goals that have been set by spreading rumors and dividing society,” the president said. ‘They are wrong if they think we will not achieve our goals. They miscalculate.”
