KLM will double the number of flights to China by the end of January, the airline told BNR. Where the company normally operated flights to China three times a week, there will be six flights as of January 30. The decision is a direct result of China’s relaxed corona rules, where foreigners no longer have to be quarantined when entering.
In response to BNR, KLM reports that it is “happy for its passengers” that the quarantine obligation is lifted on 8 January. Due to the easing of measures in China, KLM will fly to Shanghai three times a week from 30 January, which was previously only once a week. In addition, there will also be three weekly flights to Hangzhou, where KLM previously flew twice a week.
The number of KLM flights to China is still far below the pre-coronavirus level. So the airline flew to the Asian country about 25 times a week.
China has taken far-reaching measures in 2020 to keep the corona virus out as much as possible. Foreign travelers previously had to be quarantined for up to 14 days before being allowed to travel to their destination. This period has already been reduced to ten days this year and will soon expire completely.
Training after the demonstrations
The easing in China follows historic demonstrations by residents, oppressed by the country’s zero covid policy. Since those easing, however, the country has seen a huge increase in the number of infections, because the inhabitants have not developed antibodies due to the previous stricter policy and the limited number of vaccinations. The current wave of coronavirus in the country is therefore causing concern abroad.
As there are slack in travel to China, other countries fear infections will come. Japan requires travelers from China to be able to present a negative corona test, and Malaysia has also taken measures to prevent Covid-19 from entering the country in this way. The United States is considering similar measures, officials said.
