Spain wants to scrap fuel discount Related articles

Since April, motorists in Spain have been able to count on a discount of twenty euro cents per liter of petrol or diesel, as compensation for the increase in fuel prices. The costs are in the billions of euros, while the discount applies to all those who fill up in Spain. The government now wants to get rid of them.

According to Spanish media, the fuel discount has now cost the government more than five billion euros. A decision on what will happen with the discount will be made on December 29, two days before the end of the current program.

Those who fill up in Spain can count on a discount of twenty cents per liter from 1 April. So also tourists and everyone in the border area with Portugal and France. Furthermore, there is no distinction between rich or poor residents. That’s why there is now a special allowance of €100 for people who earn less than €2,000 a month. According to the Spanish Statistical Office INE, this affects more than 10 million people. The transport sector will still be able to count on the discount of twenty cents per litre.
