State media, based on the authorities, report that fewer people are taking to the streets due to the coronavirus and the cold, which has reduced the number of blood donors. Health services in the city of Suzhou in eastern Anhui province are urging people to donate blood. The pandemic poses a “huge challenge” to blood collection, resulting in a shortage of medical treatment, a statement said.
37 million daily cases
According to an estimate by the Chinese authorities, an average of 37 million corona cases are added every day. This makes the current Chinese corona outbreak the largest in the world. In the first 20 days of December, 248 million people were infected with the virus, or 18% of the Chinese population.
The sharp increase in the number of infections is probably caused by China’s rapid lifting of the previously extremely strict corona measures. At the beginning there was a zero-covid policy in the country, but after strong protests from the population, the government has changed course and is scrapping many measures.
Sichuan
According to the authorities, half of Sichuan province is infected, as are 50 percent of the inhabitants of the capital Beijing. Experts predict that the current wave of coronavirus in China could continue until the end of January.
