Strong US reaction to Taliban decision on women

In condemning the ban on women working in non-governmental organizations in Afghanistan, the US administration argued that the ban would cut off vital aid to millions of people.

“Women are at the center of humanitarian operations around the world,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement yesterday. “This decision could be devastating for the Afghan people,” he said.

United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres said: “The UN and its partners, including national and international non-governmental organizations, are helping more than 28 million Afghans who need humanitarian aid to survive.” he said he.

Guterres said he was “very disturbed by the news about the ban on NGOs.”

SUSPENDED DECEMBER 24

On December 24, the Taliban suspended the employment of female staff in NGOs until further notice.

Abdurrahman Habib, spokesman for the Ministry of Economy of the interim Taliban government, said that the Ministry sent such a decision to all NGOs in the country and that this decision must be followed.

It was noted that the licenses of NGOs that did not dismiss female staff would be revoked.

The Ministry of Higher Education of the Taliban Transitional Government announced on December 20 that the education of female students was suspended until further notice, with the instruction sent to all public and private universities in Afghanistan.

After the Taliban took over the administration of Afghanistan on August 15 last year, many women working in the public and private sectors lost their jobs. (AA)
