In the days following the storming of the US Capitol, some members of Donald Trump’s cabinet considered asking the then president to resign or use the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution to remove Trump from office. This writes Bloomberg.
Michael Pompeo, Trump’s secretary of state, told January 6 Committee investigators that then-Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia had asked him to impeach Trump. “He asked me if I could be in favor of calling an emergency meeting with the cabinet and the president,” Pompeo said.
According to the former minister, the emergency meeting would in fact have concerned the events of 6 January. And in doing so, Trump would be implicitly, or perhaps point-blank, asked if he would consider stepping down as president. I didn’t think the plan had much chance of success and that it would take a lot of effort.’
Twenty-fifth amendment
Pompeo was also asked about the possible use of the 25th amendment to the US constitution, which can be used to remove a president from office. This requires the support of the vice president and the majority of the cabinet. If the sitting president refuses to do so, a two-thirds majority is needed in both the House of Representatives and the Senate to impeach the president by passing the vice president.
