“We will continue to build mutual understanding between the United States and China, including to get the bilateral relationship back on track,” said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
The initiative would come from Chinese President Xi Jinping, who wants to mend the icy relationship with the United States and allies. For example, Jinping first met with US President Joe Biden in Bali last month.
Assertive attitude
But it’s not just relations with the United States that have been chilled by China’s assertive stance on foreign affairs. Seen around the world, public support for China is on the wane.
A good example of this is how South Korea, the Netherlands, Taiwan and Japan have effortlessly complied with US chip sanctions. And this has to stop, says Foreign Minister Wang. He told his US counterpart Antony Blinken that both countries are committed to implementing the consensus reached by their respective heads of government in Bali. “China will resist any form of hegemony and harassment,” he said.
Improved communication
China’s chief diplomat also said that strategic communications and other exchanges with Europe will be significantly improved, according to a statement from China’s foreign ministry.
