The Swiss government rejected the third gender option
In response to two proposals from the Swiss Parliament, the Federal Council affirmed that the male/female gender model is still strongly accepted in Swiss society, rejecting a third gender option under current conditions.
In the pronouncement made by the council, it was evaluated that “currently there are no social requirements” for the inclusion of a third gender option in the population registers. It was also emphasized that the third gender option would require many changes to the Swiss constitution and applicable laws in the country’s 26 cantons.
The statement made reference to the national ethics report published in 2020; The determination that it is not time to make changes regarding the gender system was recalled.
Citizens in Switzerland are registered as male or female in the civil registry.
The German government had allowed its citizens to be registered as “different” while approving a third gender option in official records. In Austria, the Constitutional Court ruled on July 15, 2018 that people who are not clearly male or female by gender have the right to use a different statement of their gender on their birth and identity documents.
