Russia will make another attempt to take the Ukrainian capital Kiev. This is what General Valery Zaluzhny, head of the Ukrainian armed forces, said in an interview with The Economist. Zaluzhny says he is preparing for that new attempt by the Russian armed forces which could take place in February or March.
When asked for his opinion on Russia’s mobilization of 300,000 reservists and ex-servicemen, Zaluzhny said it worked. “They may not be very well equipped, but they are still a problem for us. We estimate that they have a reserve of 1.2 to 1.5 million people (…) The Russians are preparing about 200,000 new troops. I have no doubt they will attack Kiev again.’
According to Zaluzhny, the Russians have withdrawn their forces so far that they are beyond the range of Western-supplied HIMARS missile launchers. In the interview, the general makes a comparison with the Second World War, in which “new reserves are being built up somewhere beyond the Urals”.
