It appears that Iran will have only a short time to enjoy membership in a United Nations (UN) women’s rights commission. The country may face expulsion from the council as massive demonstrations are violently repressed by the regime. Hundreds of people have already been killed, including many children and women.
Iran was only recently on the 45-member committee that aims to promote women’s rights. Fundamental, because the protests in Iran were born after Mahsa Amini was killed after her arrest. The young woman was arrested by Iran’s morality police for failing to follow the country’s strict dress code.
Iran is lobbying
Members of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, which oversees the committee to which Iran is a member, will vote Wednesday on membership. A majority of the 54 advisers is expected to vote in favor of the motion to remove Iran from the commission. However, Iran is trying to pressure members to abstain from voting. The vote would set an “unwelcome precedent”, according to the fundamentalist-Islamic regime.
Earlier, another body within the United Nations had already voted in favor of an investigation into the protests in the country and possible human rights violations. The investigation could open the door to international legal proceedings. However, Iran refuses to cooperate with the Commission of Inquiry. The Asian country has already arrested more than 10,000 people during the demonstrations. Dozens of protesters were sentenced to death.
