The number of journalists killed in 2022 increased by 45 percent compared to last year

In the statement made by the Press Emblem Campaign, it was stated that the devastating effects of the war between Ukraine and Russia affected journalists much more negatively this year.

According to the statement, while 115 media workers from 29 countries were killed in 2022, there was a 45 percent increase in casualties compared to 2021. A total of 79 media workers were killed last year. It was emphasized that this year’s death toll was the highest since 2018.

In 2022, 39 media workers were killed in Latin America, 37 in Europe, 30 in Asia, 7 in Africa, and 2 in North America.

It has been reported that 34 media workers have been killed in Ukraine since the start of the war in Ukraine on February 24. On the other hand, in the report published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), it was noted that there are still 533 journalists in custody or detainees in the world, and this figure increased by 13.4 percent compared to last year.
