The US space force Space Force opens a regional headquarters in South Korea. With this, the Americans want to keep an eye on North Korea’s military activities. It is the second Space Force regional headquarters outside the continental United States.
The United States has military personnel located all over the world, which constitutes an aerospace component in addition to the traditional armed forces such as the navy, army and air force. In 2019, under Donald Trump, the United States Space Force became a specific part of the US military.
North Korea
Opening a branch in South Korea has everything to do with North Korea’s recent missile exercises. “They have shown that they can reach America with a ballistic missile. The threat is very big,” says Patrick Bolder, a strategy analyst at the Center for Strategic Studies in The Hague.
And in this way, the United States and South Korea can work together to keep an eye on North Korea. “It fits well with the broader US policy of having a global military presence.” The presence is not very large, it is an office with about twenty soldiers. The symbolism, however, is important. “They show North Korea that they are being watched from all sides.”
