European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wants an ethics body for EU institutions. This body must apply uniform rules of conduct and attach great importance to transparency. Von der Leyen made the call due to the arrest of a European Parliament vice-president. He would have been corrupted by Qatar.
According to von der Leyen it is a matter of trust in the European institutions and in the workers. “That trust needs higher standards,” he says. That’s why the European Commission is now scouring its transparency register. All agreements of supervisory directors and their employees with lobbyists are recorded in this register.
The Belgian prosecutor has arrested the vice-president of the European Parliament, the Greek Eva Kaili, on charges of accepting bribes. Additionally, five others were arrested.
The purported purpose of the corruption was to obtain favorable decisions and votes in the European Parliament in favor of Qatar. The Belgian public prosecutor himself speaks of a Gulf state, but the Belgian media have told insiders that it is Qatar.
