The Mizan news agency, affiliated with the Judiciary, reported on November 15 that an unidentified protester, as a result of hearings in Tehran’s Revolutionary Court, “injured a person with a knife, took action with the intention of committing a crime against public safety and set fire to someone else’s motorcycle”. He announced that he was sentenced to death on the charges.
The protester, who was sentenced to death, was later revealed to be 23-year-old Mahan Saderat Merni.
Mohammad Reza Kanbertalib, one of the plaintiffs in the case, told the country’s media the day before that he had given his consent for all the plaintiffs in the case to withdraw their complaints.
However, there were comments in the country’s media that the plaintiffs’ declaration of consent would have no effect on the death penalty, as the Mahan Saderat Merni crime was considered “combat”.
Under the Iranian Penal Code, those accused of crimes such as “making mischief on earth (ifsad fi’l supply)” and “making war against the state (combat)” are tried with the death penalty and are usually They generally receive death sentences.
