Earlier this year, FD reported that Russia uses semiconductors from Dutch-based chip companies NXP and former subsidiary Nexperia. NXP went on to point out that all the products mentioned in the investigation report at the time were made for civilian purposes. The chip company suspended exports to Russia after the Russian invasion began.
The chips that have been found now come mainly from the home garden and kitchen appliances. Through this route, and through the illegal trade, they eventually end up in the weapons Russia deploys in Ukraine. It is therefore very difficult for Dutch chip companies to prevent chips from falling into Russian hands.
Iran
Russia makes extensive use of Iranian drones in war in Ukraine. Iran has invested heavily in drone technology in recent years so that it can resell unmanned combat aircraft to friendly countries.
