Hekmatyar referred to the assassination attempt on him last week in a Friday prayer sermon at the mosque at his party’s headquarters.

Stating that they abandoned the armed struggle and signed a peace agreement with the previous Afghan government in 2016, Hikmetyar said: “We have to make our decision. Last week, a bomb and gun attack was carried out on the mosque located at the headquarters of the Hizb-i Islamic Party in the Darul Aman region of the capital Kabul during Friday prayers.

With the intervention of Hekmatyar’s bodyguards, the attackers were neutralized and Hekmatyar survived the attack unscathed. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

Hekmatyar, who was also prime minister from 1996-1997, had to leave Kabul in 1996 after the Taliban increased its power in the country.

With the capture of Kabul by the Taliban on August 15, 2021, many leaders left the country, while Hekmatyar preferred to stay in Kabul. (AA)
