Allow immigration boats from Italy
Italy has assigned a safe port to two ships belonging to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) waiting in the open sea with more than 500 irregular migrants rescued in the Mediterranean.
The French-based NGO Doctors Without Borders, in a post on its Twitter account, claimed that the Geo Barents ship opened the Italian port of Salerno for 248 migrants rescued in different operations in the Mediterranean and that the migrants will be evacuated here.
According to news from the ANSA agency, the port of Bari was destined for 261 migrants rescued by the Humanity-1 ship belonging to the German-based NGO SOS Humanity. It has been reported that the Humanity-1 ship is heading to Bari and will drop off the migrants there.
Italian authorities assigned the island of Lampedusa as a safe harbor for 33 migrants rescued by the ship of the same name from the Germany-based NGO Louise Michel in the morning.
Thus Italy, which has implemented a “closed port” policy for NGO ships in recent weeks, allowed a total of 542 migrants on 3 ships to be evacuated in their own ports in one day.
The right-wing coalition government led by Giorgia Meloni, who took office in Italy in October, began implementing the “closed port” policy in November to prevent NGO ships from docking in Italy. Due to this policy, bilateral relations between Italy and France became strained. France had reacted to Italy’s refusal to open its ports to NGO ships. (AA)
