Bulgaria approves arms aid package for Ukraine

In Bulgaria, the parliament approved the arms aid package that Ukraine will make to this country to support its resistance to Russia.

The list of weapons to be shipped was first discussed at the closed-door session of the national defense and security committees in parliament. The types of weapons were not disclosed due to confidentiality, but were reported to not include the S-300 missiles and MiG aircraft requested by Ukraine.
“We will send technologies that will defend the skies over Ukrainian cities against Russian drones,” said Hristo Gacev, chairman of the Parliament’s Defense Committee.

MPs from the pro-Russian Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the Renaissance Party, which has a total of 52 seats in the 240-member parliament, broadcast live from the hall on their mobile phones during the closed session to block aid.

Continuing the political tradition of the former communist party in the country, BSP leader Korneliya Ninova described the other parties that support arms aid to Ukraine as a “war coalition.” Kostadin Kostadinov, leader of the populist Renaissance Party, which defended Moscow’s policy, insisted that Bulgaria leave NATO and the European Union (EU).

After Russia declared war on Ukraine, Ukraine’s demanded arms aid was repeatedly refused due to pressure from pro-Russian President Rumen Radev and political forces that agreed with him in parliament. In a session held in early November, the parliament changed its position and decided to respond positively to the request of Ukraine and the government to create the necessary aid package. (AA)
