Detained Peruvian leader seeks asylum in Mexico
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador affirmed that former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, who was removed from office, requested asylum in his country.
At the daily press conference at the National Palace, Obrador said that Castillo called him and conveyed his request for asylum. “I think he couldn’t even get out when they pulled him over,” he said.
“Yes, we are very sorry for what happened because he has been the target of constant conflicts and harassment since he legally and legitimately won the presidency. His opponents, that is, the political and economic elite of this country, did not accept the ruler, ”he said.
Sharing a memory he had with Castillo, Obrador said: “He once told me that there were ladies who covered their noses when passing through Lima and that they were exposed to racism.” Emphasizing that lessons must be learned from what happened in Peru, Obrador said: “These are soft blows, they are no longer under the control of the oligarch-run media, not military intervention. They are legally constituted authorities.”
On the other hand, information was shared that Obrador, who was expected to travel to Peru on December 15 to attend the Pacific Alliance summit, canceled the trip. (AA)
