Netanyahu calls for more time to form government
Former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called on Israeli President Isaac Herzog to extend the term of office to form a government for two weeks, according to the Israel Public Broadcasting Corporation (KAN). “Government formation negotiations are ongoing and great progress has been made,” Netanyahu told Herzog.
The news, which did not include any other details, did not mention whether the Israeli president had agreed to Netanyahu’s request. Herzog’s legal deadline for Netanyahu to form a government is Sunday, December 11.
A FAR RIGHT GOVERNMENT CAN BE ESTABLISHED
In snap general elections held on November 1 in Israel, which has been in a spiral of snap elections and coalition crises in recent years, the right-wing bloc led by former prime minister and opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu won a clear victory by sending 64 deputies to the 120-seat parliament.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog tasked Netanyahu with forming the government on November 13.
Led by Netanyahu, the right-wing bloc consists of the religious parties Shas and United Torah Judaism, and the far-right Religious Zionism and Jewish Power parties. (AA)
