US to deploy additional troops to Estonia
In the statement made by the Estonian Defense Ministry, it was stated that the US will deploy infantry units to the country. In the statement, it was stated that the US-made HIMARS rocket system and equipment related to this system will be deployed in Estonia.
Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said this decision marks a significant increase in the alternate US military presence in Estonia and the Baltic states.
Pevkur said the decision demonstrates the longstanding commitment of the United States to the security of the region and strengthens the presence of NATO. The US infantry unit typically has 80 to 250 soldiers.
At a time when the war between Ukraine and Russia is raging, the announced deployment in Estonia, a NATO member and Russia’s neighbor, is believed to be aimed at strengthening NATO’s eastern flank.
Estonian defense officials announced on December 3 that they would buy the HIMARS rocket system from the US in a $200 million deal.
Officials stated that the deal would provide training, as well as ammunition and equipment.
Noting that the deal is the biggest arms acquisition project ever, the officials said it would also boost Estonia’s defense capability.
