One of those contracts could have resulted in a deal that would have been lucrative for one of the members of the British House of Lords. The Labor Party therefore wants documents released that provide more clarity on the deals. However, the Conservatives were allowed by their party to abstain from voting on the papers.
Labor are hoping the documents could provide more clarity on contracts with PPE MedPro, the company in which Conservative politician Michelle Mone has interests. The contracts would have a value of approximately 250 million euros. Mone himself allegedly threw the ball to responsible ministers during the onset of the corona pandemic. She has since been accused of profiting from it herself, which her lawyers deny. Partly as a result of the scandal, she took a leave of absence from her job as a member of the House of Lords.
Unusable protective devices
Opposition politicians accuse the conservatives of “chumocracy” because they do business with family members or companies linked to those in power. In addition, deals during the corona pandemic sometimes involved unusable protection products.
Conservatives, meanwhile, are trying to avoid the release of the documents. Speaking to Reuters, an anonymous conservative says there is no deadline for the release, leaving the government to wait. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declined to comment on the scandal, not least because a mediation process with MedPro is ongoing. However, the government defends the method during the onset of the corona pandemic, because there was a worldwide rush for protective equipment.
