UK Main Opposition Leader: We will dissolve the House of Lords
Keir Starmer, leader of the Labor Party in England, confirmed to Sky News that he wanted to dissolve the House of Lords, adding that he did not think anyone could defend the House of Lords.
Referring to the party commission report which Labor MP Gordon Brown will release today on the future of England, Starmer said: “This is one of the recommendations in today’s report. “What we’re going to do next today is look at these recommendations, test them, and see specifically how they might be implemented.” Asked if he expects to dissolve the House of Lords in his first term if he is elected prime minister, Starmer said:
“Yes, I hope because when I asked Gordon Brown to create a commission to do this, I told him that my request was for recommendations that could be implemented in the first term. We’ll have a chance to fix our economy and our politics, and I want to make sure we get it exactly right.”
ARE ASSIGNED BEFORE ELECTED
In a statement on the subject, Gordon Brown MP stressed that the current House of Lords is untenable, adding: “Every second House in the world is relatively small, with very few exceptions, and is generally smaller than the first House. There is currently a House of Lords with 830 members (in the UK).
In England, which is governed by a bicameral system, the House of Commons is elected, while the House of Lords is determined from generation to generation or by appointment. The House of Lords, which has more than 800 members, includes 90 hereditary members and 26 Church of England archbishops.
The rest of the Life Lords are appointed by the British monarch at the suggestion of the government or the House of Lords Appointment Commission. (AA)
