Former Chinese President Jiang Zemin dies
Jiang Zemin, who served as China’s head of state from 1993 to 2003 and held senior positions in the Chinese Communist Party, has been announced to have passed away.
The Chinese news agency Xinhua announced that Jiang was undergoing cancer treatment and died in Shanghai due to multiple organ failure.
After the Tiananmen era, the 96-year-old Zemin established a series of diplomatic contacts and normalized relations with the United States. During the land period, China weathered the 1997-1998 Asian economic crisis without any problem, joined the World Trade Organization in 2001, and applied to host the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and was successful.
One of Zemin’s most important achievements in his country was the return of Hong Kong to China. When he last appeared before the public in 2019, Zemin was also seen as one of the names that laid the foundation for China’s economic leap today.
The “Three Representations” theory put forward by Zemin was included in the Chinese Communist Party’s charter in 2002 and took its place alongside the theories of Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping.
