German airline Lufthansa wants to hire 20,000 more employees. However, now that the aviation industry is recovering strongly from the coronavirus crisis, the company is facing severe staff shortages.
Lufthansa is looking for more employees in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Belgium. These are pilots, cabin crew, technicians and IT specialists. During the pandemic, the workforce has been reduced due to heavy losses. Lufthansa had 108,000 employees at the end of September. At the end of 2019 there were still 138,000. Lufthansa even had to be saved from destruction by the German government.
Optimism and strikes
“To be at the forefront of the industry, we need motivated and dedicated staff for a range of tasks and challenges,” Lufthansa Chief of Staff Michael Niggemann said in a statement. CEO Carsten Spohr recently said that Lufthansa has put the pandemic behind it and is looking to the future with optimism. Lufthansa is now profitable again. The company, which also has the Eurowings, Austrian, Swiss and Brussels Airlines brands, suffered strikes last summer due to dissatisfaction with staff and wage shortages.
