Bank robberies in New York are up 42 percent from last year
In the information obtained from the officials of the New York Police Department (NYPD), it was reported that there were 135 bank robberies until the last week of October 2022, this number was 95 in the same period last year. Thus, it was recorded that bank robberies increased by 42 percent annually.
A bank branch in Manhattan is said to have suffered 4 armed robberies since March, and 15 robberies, which took place at other downtown banks, are suspected to have been carried out by the same person.
While there were 2,440 bank robberies in the US in 2019, this number was reported to have dropped to 1,724 in 2021, and in 1991, the year bank robberies nationwide peaked, 9,388 bank branches were attacked by robbers.
CAR THEFT IS ALSO INCREASING
According to statistics shared by the New York City Council, the downtown crime rate increased 5.9 percent in October 2022 compared to the same period a year earlier.
In October 2021, 10,324 crimes in different categories were committed in the city, while this figure increased to 10,930 in the same period of 2022. In the same period, car thefts increased by 19.3 percent and home burglaries they increased by 8.9 percent.
