Big claim: Russia-USA met behind closed doors
While the war between Russia and Ukraine has been going on since February 24, one notable claim came from the US media.
The newspaper reported that Jake Sullivan met with his Russian counterparts at the development he announced with the headline “Senior White House official attended meeting with top Putin advisers.” The newspaper wrote that the escalation of tension and the threat of nuclear weapons were also on the agenda.
Writing that US national security adviser Sullivan met with Putin’s foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov, the newspaper said: “Sullivan also communicated directly with the Russian government. He met with Nikolai Patrushev”. The newspaper based these claims on anonymous sources.
OUR PURPOSE IS TO KEEP COMMUNICATION CHANNELS OPEN
“These developments are not to reach a solution to the war in Ukraine, but to take precautions against escalation of tension and keep communication channels open,” the officials said.
Although the White House announced that Sullivan did not meet with any senior Russian officials, the British news agency Reuters continued the story today. The Reuters news agency cited Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov’s remarks to reporters as “up-to-the-minute.” Although Peskov said that Russia is open to negotiations, he did not respond to a question about whether there was a meeting between Russia and the United States.
Relations between Russia and the United States showed signs of softening with the inauguration of US President Joe Biden. Biden met with Putin during his first term. The two names met in Geneva in June 2021 in Geneva. Biden and Putin met twice in December 2021 and once in February 2022.
