UN appeal against the climate crisis

The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, in his opening speech at the Leaders’ Summit of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), said that the The 8 billionth member of the world population will be born soon and the world population will cross a new threshold.

Ask Leaders: “How do we respond when this newborn baby asks us, ‘What did you do for our planet while you had the chance?'” Guterres noted that global greenhouse gas emissions and warming are constantly on the rise.

Saying that today’s urgent crises cannot be an excuse to put the fight against climate change on the back burner, Guterres said: “People must be the cause of climate change and people must be the solution. Every ray of hope in the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius keeps us on the path to achieving zero emissions by 2050. But right now, the 1.5 degree goal is on life support and the machines do not work properly. We are dangerously close to a point of no return.” he said.

Stating that it is critical for G20 countries to speed up the transformation and for developing countries to cut emissions, Guterres said:

“That is why I am calling for a historic Climate Solidarity Pact between developed and developing countries at the start of COP27. A pact in which all countries will make an additional contribution to the reduction of emissions to limit the increase in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The United States and China, the world’s two largest economies, have a particular responsibility to contribute to efforts to make this pact a reality. Humanity has a choice right now: the Climate Solidarity Pact or the Mass Suicide Pact.”

Guterres also said that the Loss and Damage Mechanism, which is intended to compensate economic losses of least developed countries affected by disasters and disasters caused by climate change, can no longer be “swept under the rug.”

Stating that it is a moral responsibility to compensate for loss and damage, Guterres said that everyone must act together against the growing effects of climate change. (AA)
