About the editor: This is America where guns and constitutions multiply. Note the following to avoid being shot:
Don’t go to elementary, middle, or high school. Don’t go to university. Do not drive or ride in a car. Do not be a pedestrian and do not enter a cinema. Or a restaurant. Never go to concerts or sporting events. Don’t stay at home (scatter shot) and don’t go out (scatter shot).
don’t have a job If you do this, stay away from people getting fired. Do not go to a hair salon or supermarket. Don’t get married or divorced.
Don’t go to church services. Don’t knock on doors or pull into the wrong entrance.
And remember, stand your stand is for the guy holding the gun, not you.

About the editor: I don’t think the rules of “claiming” are the problem with the recent spate of people shooting at others who were not a threat to them.
“Continue” only means that a person who, through no fault of his own, reasonably believes that he is actually at risk of death or serious injury need not withdraw. In California, this has been the norm for over 100 years. (See the 1895 People vs. Hecker California case.)
The problem is shootings by people who do not reasonably believe they are being threatened. It is rooted in the overwhelming and irrational fear of others fueled by the NRA and bigoted politicians who shout, “Crime! Crime! You need a gun!”, also considering that the violent crime rate in the US has been steadily declining for decades and is now about half what it was in 1990.

About the editor: Gun owners tell us that gun owners are good, law-abiding citizens. And they are until they are no more. Then people die.
Then gun owners (and legislators) shrug and give us “thoughts and prayers.” And do nothing at all.

About the editor: Perhaps The Times should consider a new section devoted solely to gun violence: Sports, California, Calendar, Death.
